Picture Book Contest Prompt 3

7/19/2012

I'm loving the super creative responses. Some are lyrical and mysterious, others are hilarious. Do join in and please let your friends know about this.

And here's prompt #3
The spoon runs away with the fork leaving the knife all alone. Is she jealous/forgiving/relieved? How does it all end?

All three were great friends until the night of the festival dance when spoon ran off with fork. Knife realised she was better off without them. Giving bread a massage of margarine late one evening she met a new member to the neighbour hood. Soon spoon and fork became a distant memory.

...lol. This is crazy!

I see this one as a perfect vehicle to teach kids about divorce or just explaining how people just make choices for many reasons. The spoon runs away with the fork so they can toss salad together. They both love tossing salad. They work well together. The spoon is very proud of the fork and teaches the toddler how to eat goodies, preparing her for grownup eating using the fork. The spoon assures the child that he will stick around in case needed for help eating desserts. The knife is aggressive and moody and always cutting things up. Sometimes it's even dangerous. It has to be put back into the kitchen drawer for a time out. When the child gets older it finds where the spoon and fork were hiding and reunites them all at a pork chop and veggie and bread and butter dinner where each utensil does his job beautifully. Everyone makes up in the dishwasher after dinner.

Oh, I love this one. Thought it would be too preachy at first, but no!

The knife thought he was SOOOOO cool.
Cutting stuff.
And spreading stuff.
and being all "dangerous."

Well, spoon and fork were fed up with it.
But they were still trying to be nice about it.

"I can scoop," said Spoon, sheepishly.
"Doesn't matter," said Knife, "not as good as cutting."

"And I can help pick things up," said Fork, poking his prongs into some lettuce.
"Doesn't matter," said Knife. " Not as good as spreading."

Knife just strutted around like he was the bee's knees.
"You know, I'm so awesome, I don't even NEED you guys."

Spoon and Fork looked at each other and winked.
"Yeah, you're right, Knife, you don't need us at all, do you?" said Fork.

"Yeah, you can cut and spread...what do you need us for?" asked Spoon.

"We'll just leave now," they said, "so you don't have to bother with us."

Knife could hardly believe his luck.
The whole plate to himself!

The next day, Knife got ready for a day of cutting, spreading, and being dangerous.

But without Fork holding onto everything, nobody wanted to cut anything.
And who needs anything spread on bread when you can't cut anything.

"May as well just eat finger food," the people said,
and knife stayed in the drawer.

Which, by the way, did nothing for his dangerous reputation.
In fact, it may have hurt it.

So Knife didn't feel too bad crying about his situation.
Fork and Spoon, who enjoyed a nice vacation from Knife's bullying,
heard his crying and came back, all smiles.

Sure, there were still some fights in the cutlery drawer,
but from that day on,
Knife learned,
there is no I in utensils.

(actually, there is, but don't tell Knife, ok?)

I thought we were best friends. We did everything together. Danced in the dishwasher. Giggled on the napkin. Teased fork for that crazy hair. His crazy hair. That's what got her attention. Spoon loved fork's hair. The wedding was great. I was her Knife of Honor... more giggles, dancing, and teasing.

But now she's gone.

Yeah, she calls. But it's not the same.

And if marrying fork wasn't enough... they've gone and had a bunch of sporks. So much crying, cooing, and cradling.

She's still dancing. Giggling. Teasing.

But it's not with me anymore.

Wait... is that a Knork? *giggles* He's got really cool hair!

The knife is relieved. He is a loner. He never played well with the fork and spoon. They could pick things up and he could only cut or stab. He was much more aggressive than the two other utensils and always felt he wasn't an essential utensil. The spoon and fork could be used independently, but could the knife? He was having many self-doubts. The knife was depressed. He never fit in and spent many hours isolating himself from others...much like writers. Is it any wonder he used his blade to hurt himself?
