"Ella and Kate are twins. Everyone loves Kate but Not Ella. Why? And what can Ella do about it?"

Kate and Ella Kontrarius are identical twins. Kate's nose turns up at the exact angle as Ella's. Ella's green eyes and carrot colored hair are an exact match to Kate's. They are exactly the same height and weight. Their lopsided little smiles look as if they were photocopied onto their faces! Their mommy dresses them exactly alike and braids their hair exactly alike. The twin beds in their bedroom are exactly alike.

Strangely enough, it's very easy to tell these twins apart. You know immediately who is who the minute they stand in a room with you. Kate always appears to be hearing her favorite song in her head. She hums while she works, always volunteers to help at school and loves to clown around with everyone.

Ella enters a room with her very own storm cloud hanging over her head. She doesn't smile. She doesn't even look at you. She speaks out of turn and can't sit still at her desk. And don't make a suggestion or ask her a question! She'll snort and growl and pretty near snap your head off! Well not really snap it off but it certainly feels like it. Kate is about the only person who can calm her sister down. "Temper Ella, temper, she often whispers to her if things get too out of hand. No one likes Ella and it seems there is nothing she can do about it.

The girls mother loves them both very much but she is very worried and hasn't a clue about what the solution might be. Mrs. Kontrarius goes to talk with Dr. Brew. All her mommy friends think he'll know what to do. He invites them all to meet at his office. Kate plays with the fun toys on the floor in Dr. Brew's office. Ella sits in the corner with her coat on.

Finally Dr Brew goes over to Ella. "Are you Kate," he asks,"or are you Ella?"
"I'm Ella, I AM ELLA!" screams Ella.
"I see, says Dr Brew with a patient smile. But you look EXACTLY alike."
"But I'm ME!" Ella cries. "You can't see, but I'm ME!"

Dr Brew takes Mrs Kontrarius into the next room. He thinks he knows just what to do.
"It's a classic case of Who-am-i-tis." He tells Mrs. Kontrarius. Ella is upset that people will think she is REALLY just a copy of her sister. She is really afraid and will do EVERYTHING to prove them wrong."

"But what can I do, doctor?"

"Stop dressing them alike. Let Ella cut her hair off if she wants to. Give Ella her own room to decorate the way she wants. Lets see what happens." Dr Brew says goodbye to Mrs Kontrarius.

Sure enough Kate and her mother slowly begin to notice a change in Temperella. The Who-am-I-tis begins to fade. Ella knows she is Ella even though she looks exactly like her sister Kate.

Ella can try to "copycat" everything that Kate does, but soon will realize this doesn't work. Being herself is how to make the best friends of all. :)

"I don't want to go," said Ella.
"But honey, you're on the team, you HAVE to go," her Mom said, sliding the freshly cut orange slices into a plastic zip up bag.

"But I don't even LIKE soccer," said Ella.
"Sure you do," her Mom said, taking out two water bottles from the fridge. "Remember how much fun you had last year?"

"Yeah," thought Ella, "before Kate decided to play."

Even though Kate was older by exactly two minutes and 53 seconds, she followed Ella around all the time. Most of time that was ok with Ella; as far as twins go, Kate was all right.

Until suddenly, when, this year, Kate decided she wanted to do all the afterschool activites Ella did.

"Kate!" Mom called. "C'mon, we're gonna be late!"

Kate bounded down the stairs.
"Oh, Coach doesn't mind if we're late, right Ella-bella?"

Ella didn't like that nickname.
Or the fact that Kate thought she could just waltz over the game any old time she wanted to.

But no one else seemed to mind.
Thing is, Kate was phenomenal at soccer.
And even though this was her first year on the team, she was the star already.

It was,
"Kate this"
and
"Kate that"
and
"wow, Kate scored another goal!"

Ella had just about enough of it, let me tell you.
Soccer used to be fun.

She tried telling her mom about it, and she listened, but nothing happened.
Ella suspected her Mom was finally so happy that both girls could be going to the same place at the same time and she didn't want to mess it up.

So Ella did all she could do.
She pouted.

She pouted in the car on the way to the game.
She pouted during warmups.
She pouted on the bench.

When she finally got to go in the game,
after "golden-girl" Kate got her fourth goal,
Ella pouted as she played defender.

Now, no one knows for sure, but Ella's pouting quite possibly lead to the other team scoring their only goal of the game.

Ella kind of hoped everyone would think it was her fault.
So she could get kicked off the team.

Soccer was just not as fun anymore, and she had other ideas.
Something she loved WAY more than soccer.

Plus, if she did it at the same time as soccer, Kate couldn't follow her to it.

That night, when the lights were out, Ella scuttled under the blanket with her flashlight.

"What are you doing under there?" Kate asked.
"Secret stuff that you can't know," said Ella, "You know the rules.."

The rules were, in fact, that under the covers was off limits to anyone that wasn't the owner of said covers. It was the only place Ella felt like she could be alone.

She flipped to a fresh page in her notebook and wrote:
Operation Afterschool Art Class, Day 14.
Her pencil flew over the page, drawing the details of the day.

Kate's three goals.
The orange slices.
And a whole lot of pouting.

Finally she drew a big rectangle that was skinny and tall.
At the bottom she wrote a big 0.
At the top she wrote 100.

After thinking for a second, she drew a quick line about 3/4 of the way up and scribbled in all the space below it, to the bottom of the rectangle.

Then she wrote:
"Operation 75 percent complete."
and shut her notebook.
and went to bed.

Kate loves being around people.
Ella loves reading books. Alone.

Kate's dramatic flair has the audience of friends applauding and laughing.
Ella prefers to the dramas in her stories.

Kate tries out for everything... cheerleading, soccer, art club, newspaper, class president.
Ella likes to write, draw, create. Her creations provide all the accolades she needs.

Kate can sing, dance, or act on a whim, much to the thrill of their classmates.
Ella just blushes and tries to disappear.

Until the cute boy comes along...

He notices Kate. He laughs. He applauds. He dances too.
Ella notices him.

What can she do to be seen?

She starts with a handshake.

"Hello. My name is Ella. I'm an introvert with social skills. Do you draw? I have a great story that needs pictures..."
