WALKOUT is an important book about standing up for what you believe it. And it's also a beautiful friendship story. The first line, "Let's walk together to show our support for safe schools," grabs your attention as Maddie and her best friend Stella grapple with what it means to take action. The bright and lively illustrations complement the text. Readers will be rooting for these best friends as they make important choices and become role models for student activism. This is a perfect book for families and educators!

Makes school safety an accessible topic for young readers

WALKOUT is the story of two best friends with different feelings about participating in a school walkout to support safe schools. While Maddie organizes and plans, Stella worries about whether she should participate with the others. Adorable illustrations help lighten an otherwise serious topic, making this an accessible and appropriate book for young readers. This will make a great addition to school and public libraries.

I shared this book with my granddaughter. I've been looking for something like this. It helps prepare kids for some of the tough issues today's schools are facing, and gives parents and other adults (like concerned grandmothers) a way to open up the discussion. Loved how the friends solved a problem in a positive way. Illustrations are adorable!

WALKOUT Empowers Kids To Stand Up For What They Think Is Right
Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2020Violence in school is something kids deal with regularly, whether it’s kids getting into scuffles or bullying – or worse, school shootings. Parents always want to know how they can teach their children about School safety without instilling fear and yet still get the important message across. Our children need to be heard and spoken to with honesty and empathy. Tina Shepardson has created “WALKOUT” to do just that. Written with empowering child-friendly language, the main character “Maddie” organizes a school walkout to support safe schools but her best friend Stella is unsure about joining the walkout as she fears about the consequence. At the same time, Maddie’s principal has announced that only older grades can participate. In the end, kids learn that they are never too young to stand up for what’s right. WALKOUT is a delightful children’s book by Tina Shepardson that promotes safe schools. It teaches kids about the importance of standing up for what you believe in, be counted, and live a community-oriented life. Tina was inspired to create WALKOUT to explain school safety concepts to young children in a fun and engaging way. WALKOUT encourages children to do something now about school safety. Highly recommended by pediatricians, teachers, and parents as a valuable resource in educating children with an effective approach that works! For ages 4 and up. Empowering, motivating, and easy to understand the story with eye-popping illustrations make this book perfect for every home, classroom, and professional who works with children! Children in pre-school, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade and in general classrooms, special education, and life-skills classrooms will find that this educational book both fun, engaging, and easy to comprehend. There is no age limit on safety!

Importance of School Safety
Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2020Shepardson’s WALKOUT is a simple explanation to the very young that standing up for what you believe in is important. And Sirrell’s illustrations artfully being Shepardson’s story to life. Maddie organizes her class for the schoolwide walkout against school violence. And Stella, her best friend is afraid to participate. Through gentle persistence and delicate persuasion, Maddie repeatedly tries to get Stella to participate. Stella understands the importance of the schoolwide movement but takes the principal’s words to heart (only older grades may participate). So, when her whole class (including her teacher) line up to join in the walkout, Stella sees and understands that there is a balance between interpreting the words of adults and doing the right thing to support the safety of all students, whether they be young or old.

You’re never too young to stand up for what is right
Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2020What does it mean to take action? To take a stand? To make your voice heard?
Walkout takes a sensitive look at what it means to stand up for your beliefs.
We’re introduced to the cause – safe schools –when Maddie starts the narrative: "Let's walk together to show our support for safe schools.” But her friend Stella isn’t so sure they should do this, because only the older grades are allowed to walk for the cause. In the end, Maddie’s perseverance helps Stella to overcome her anxiety – and the whole class walks with courage and determination. The important takeaway for the reader: You’re never too young to stand up for what is right.

Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2020A well crafted look into what younger children can do in terms of speaking up. Knowing how slow publishing can be, I realize this book was written before all the recent protests, but I couldn’t help but think it applies to so many situations where children need to make their voices heard. Recommending this to some teachers I know. Great social studies lesson of discussion springboard.

A Timely Story
Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2020A strong and important book for our children! It's a story of perseverance and courage. Although Stella and Maddie take different approaches, they both get there in the end---which I love. This book shows kids the importance of standing up for what they believe in, even if they are scared. And while one character is the leader in orchestrating a walk-out, the other is trepidatious with her response. And that's ok too. We're all different. Great book, especially today!
