Kids will have empathy for Oliver, a boy who wants to be a good friend but hasn't quite learned what it means to have personal space. When Oliver's attempts to apply what he observes from the class pets, Mac and Cheese, don't go as planned, his teacher makes a suggestion that allows Oliver to see things differently and be the friend he wants to be.

Oliver has NO personal space bubble, and he's learning great friendship skills -- from guinea pigs, who also have no personal space bubbles! All his friends at school have bigger bubbles, and don't appreciate his guinea pig friendship lessons. Oliver has some tough lessons to learn. His teacher is right there -- to teach Oliver about personal space so he can have the friendship that he craves! Great book about personal space -- especially relevant in today's climate with personal space more important than ever. My students thoroughly enjoyed learning from Oliver -- and from Mac and Cheese.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timely and Timeless story of respecting personal space

I love when a book shows a child’s misunderstanding of a situation, in the case of MAC AND CHEESE AND THE PERSONAL SPACE INVADERS,
how to make a friend. Oliver thinks the guinea pigs provide a good example of friendship and he tries to be like them. They’re adorable, albeit not the best models of friendship, but Oliver learns to navigate the world of friendship in spite of his failed first attempts. As a teacher, I think this will become a classroom favorite, as children learn to understand personal space and respecting physical boundaries. The illustrations are wonderful and add to the gentle messages of Gutiérrez’s words.

Oliver is inspired by a pair of tightly huddled guinea pigs to be a great friend to his peers. However, he has trouble knowing where to draw the line - he gets too close and turns into a 'personal space invader', until Mrs. Lopez gives him the tools to fine-tune his friendliness. In this engaging read, the author wonderfully explores an often-not-talked-about and yet important topic for children, and offers kids the language and vocabulary to communicate and navigate personal space preferences. This book is an excellent tool, guide, and very relatable story to add to bookshelves in homes, classrooms, and libraries!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for teaching kids about personal space

This is such a sweet story. It teaches children about people’s need for personal space without being didactic. Since reading it to my son, I’ve been referencing it when I remind him to give his baby sister some space. This can be such a hard thing for kids to understand and the teacher in the story so lovingly helps the boy to figure out how to navigate the situation. Giving kids the idea of staying at arm’s length is really helpful as well as the idea of getting consent before you get closer than that. The illustrations pair perfectly with the story to keep it light-hearted. We’ll definitely be rereading this story.

This lovely picture book with sweet illustrations is a great teaching tool for awakening small children to the nuances of personal space "rules." I loved the gentle way it teaches kids to observe and recognize each individual's comfort zone for personal proximity, as well as to ask for permission when it's necessary to break the personal space rules. A great tool for all children, I think it will be especially welcomed by parents and educators of children on the autism spectrum, who often are challenged by social boundaries. An added bonus is the sprinkling of Spanish words and phrases, which will broaden English-speakers' vocabularies. Overall, a lovely book!
