  • a fun, heartwarming, belly-satisfying story
By LDA on June 14, 2019
This story satisfies. Kids love dinosaurs and who, at any age, doesn't relish food that's hard won. It's a survival adventure with a charming protagonist who surprises as a bit of a food connoisseur and not just an opportunist. Above all, Jurassic rat is a fine provider for his family. The illustrations are funny and fit perfectly with the gentle humor in the story. The story has educational value with interesting facts woven in the story and in back matter.

  • Rat is BIG fun!
Jolene Gutiérrez on July 11, 2019
Rat lives during the Jurassic period and is as big as a cat! He has a huge family to feed and goes out searching for food each day, even though he's clumsy. Join Rat in his food-hunting expedition and learn about the dangers of the time period as well as the potential food sources. You feel as if you're right there with Rat because of the onomatopoeic words like squawk, ploppity, and whump as well as John Seckman's colorful, cartoon-like illustrations. A wonderful example of a book that teaches so much while retaining a fun, kid-friendly feel. Peterson includes some great back matter that allows readers to learn more if they'd like.

  • Little Known Jurassic Rat
By Willow on July 16, 2019
Jurassic Rat? Who would have thought? In this fictional story we follow Rat as he forges for his family during Jurassic times. We discover the daily perils he must face just to survive. What I loved most about this story is that Eleanor Ann Peterson has chosen to write from a single father point of view. Not a point of view many picture books address. This daddy risks his all to provide for his youngsters. Kudos Rat…you’re awesome!  Only one thing bothered me about the story…it ended too soon. I wanted to know more about this oversized rat, his family, and their adventures during this time period. Perhaps there will be a sequel? Jurassic Rat II.  Jurassic Rat would make a perfect gift for dinosaur followers, young and old. It's certainly a must have picture book to add to any pre ice age collection.

  • An interesting addition to any lover of prehistoric fun!
By Cindy Vattathil on November 14, 2019
This book is so fun...not just because of the brilliant illustrations, but also because it's all based in fact. I had never before heard of Jurassic rats, but the end pages are chocked full of great information about this critter. And the story about a Jurassic rat family is just cute and endearing. I loved every page of prehistoric fun!!

  • Here comes Jurassic Rat!
By Debra Ann Bartsch on June 30, 2019
This is a fun read. You will be surprised that the Jurassic Rat is based on fact! As a family rat, the dad needs to provide for his growing family and goes through an exhausting search for just the right food. The illustrations are so colorful, friendly and bright. These dinos are so cute! There are facts in the glossary and research resources for further exploring this unusual rat. Great job Eleanor Ann Peterson and John Seckman!

  • This book is just delightful and I certainly learned something new
By Whispering Stories Book Blog on August 5, 2019
Back in the Jurassic period there live a rat as big as a cat. Rat had a very big family and it was up to him to go out each day into the land of the dinosaurs and fetch them home some food. Unfortunately, Rat was rather clumsy.  Follow rat as he tries to search out and take home the food that he’s found without him losing it on the way.  I hadn’t actually heard of a Jurassic Rat before but they did exist 160-million-years-ago. They were bigger versions of the modern-day rat. In this story, Rat has lots of mouths to feed and he has to go out every day into the dangerous land where the dinosaurs roamed to gather food and take it back to his home to stop his family from starving.  He didn’t enjoy having to enter dangerous territory but he knew he had to for his family. Rat was also very clumsy and could fall over his own feet, so getting food back to his family was doubly hard.  The book is very entertaining and enjoyable. I did think it was going to be told in rhyme as the opening page has rhyming text but the rest of the book is not told in rhyme form. There are only a few words per page which would make this book a great choice for those learning to read and new readers.  The illustrations by John Seckman are superb. They are eye-catching and a lot of fun. I can see children giggling away at some of the expressions rat pulls and the animals he has to deal.  At the back of the book is information on Jurassic Rats and a glossary of terms, so the book is educational too. I think this book is just delightful and I certainly learned something new whilst enjoying a great story too.

  • Fun and educational
By rae on February 15, 2020
This fun story follows the journey of one brave but bumbling jurassic rat, who stumbles his way through various dangers while trying to find food for his very large family. The story subtly teaches kids about jurassic rats, their environment, and what they ate. Some information about dinosaurs and insects who lived during the Jurassic Period is sprinkled in, too, and the book includes interesting back-matter to help you dig a little deeper into the past. In fact, the back matter was one of my favorite parts. It was simple, child-friendly, and educational. I learned something new. I was especially intrigued by the information about living fossils – plants and animals that have remained living and largely unchanged over the last 160 million years.  With plenty of funny mishaps and onomatopoeia, this story is sure to delight young readers and have them rooting for Rat. John Seckman’s colorful illustrations add a delightful element of humor, playfulness, and fun.
