Steal This: Using Cultural References for Writers and Illustrators

Steal this! Using Cultural References For Writers & Illustrators was created to show how writers and illustrators can and have learned from classic literature, fine art, current events, and pop culture in order to write or illustrate their own contemporary children's books that engage editors, art directors, and agents (and of course, from there children, teachers, and parents).

Before watching the recording (which, sadly I didn't have time to edit for this free version) make sure that you have a  paper and pen and pencil handy to both write and draw in this unconventional but inspiring love fest.

Because we do these webinars as both a way to give back to our community and let folks know about upcoming courses, there will be references to our upcoming Illustration course that truly does teach fearful beginners to award-winners how to radically improve their chances of publication by illustrating their own work or making their existing illustration career more marketable. If you are up for learning more about this please click this link here:  http://bit.ly/KidsBookArt

Meanwhile, if you're wondering if it's worth the time to watch, here are some anonymous comments from our lovely live webinar participants about this workshop and webinar for both writers and illustrators:

Completely inspiring, what a wonderful introduction into Picture Books! • Wow that was incredible… I feel like I just took a mini art history course and can see how to start applying that to PBs! • This was fabulous!...You got my brain bubbling! • Just wonderful! •  Laughing • What's interesting is that doing this… is very freeing, and I wound up with an illustration that I might use some day. • That was a really fun exercise!! • SO beautiful! • It's joyful!!!! • Great stuff and sincerely appreciate the resources and suggestions •  Wonderful.... I just realized I’m going to be on vacation during the course - so I guess I’m bringing my laptop!!!! • It's been so great - thank you! A lovely appetizer to the course starting on the 25th - can't wait!! Sooooo excited :) • It was my first webinar and I didn't know what to expect or how to participate so I sat and listened and it was great. I can't wait to start the class. • This was so informative! • Thank you, all. I have been stirred to try new ways with my illustration!  • Thank you, Mira, Sharismar, and Melissa. I always enjoy learning and growing. • I am glad I stayed up for this • Thank you all for a wonderful webinar! • This was unexpected fun - (and awkwardness) • Many thanks all! The course sounds magnificent • Enjoyed very much! I teach elementary art, so I’ve also got some great new ideas for work with students : ) • Yup, thoroughly enjoyed it.. • Great ideas here.

And if you haven't already downloaded the writing and illustrating template, which is a super fun part of it all, please click the link below.

I really enjoyed this webinar! I truly look forward to working and learning with many of you in the course! As I have said, I am a writer, not an illustrator, but I am going in with an open mind, and I know that everything I learn will definitely help inform my picture book writing! See you all soon!
